Chester Noyes Greenough was born in Massachusetts of an old New England family and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Harvard. He was head of the English Dept. at the University of Illinois, 1907-1910, then returned to Harvard as Professor and later as Dean. He wrote on English composition and literature.
